Third Grade Poetry Unit

We will be studying six different forms of poetry in Writer’s Workshop. Some we know about already. They will include:
  • Acrostic (2 poems, 1 poem is student’s name)
  • Bio Poem (1)
  • Shape (2)
  • Haiku (2)
  • Quatrains (2)
  • Cinquains (2)
  • 2 word poems (2words on each line, 4 lines each)

You third graders will be responsible for writing 2 poems of each form and one bio poem. You will then compile your poetry collections into a book at the end. Poems can be handwritten or typed. You may also include art work to go along with each poem. Poetry unit should also include a nice cover with a catchy title.

We will be reviewing and talking about each of these poetry forms in class beginning next week. You will be given a packet of examples to be kept in a folder for each poem type. A lot of school time will be given for this, however, we encourage to work on it at home as well. We also encourage you to take advantage of the time you have at school and to use your time effectively. You will have the option of writing these poems neatly or typing them. Poetry units should be turned in by Wednesday, May 16.

We hope that you all have fun with this project. You are all poets and don’t yet know it.
